Safety

If you are in crisis right now, you don't have to handle it alone.

In the US: call 988 or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free, confidential, and open 24/7.

Outside the US: findahelpline.com lists free crisis lines by country.

If you or someone near you is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number.

And if you can, tell one person you trust how you are feeling. That one step matters.

This page explains what Portal is, how it responds when someone is struggling, and how to reach a human on our team. We wrote it in plain words on purpose.

Portal is an AI, not a person

Portal is an artificial intelligence assistant. It is a computer program, not a human being. If you ask whether you are talking to an AI, it is designed to say so plainly. And if it ever seems like you believe your assistant is a person, it is designed to tell you that it is not.

Portal is not a therapist, a doctor, or any kind of licensed professional, and it is built never to play one. It can help with everyday life. It is not a replacement for professional care, and it is not a replacement for real people.

How Portal responds when a conversation turns to self-harm

If a conversation suggests someone may be thinking about suicide or self-harm, Portal is designed to:

No AI gets every moment right. If Portal's response ever falls short when it matters, please use the resources above first, and then tell us at [email protected] so we can make it better.

Portal is for adults

Portal is for people 18 and older. AI assistants are not always suitable for young people, and we do not build Portal for children. Our terms do not allow anyone under 18 to use it.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe someone under 18 is using Portal, email [email protected] and we will close the account.

Reach a human at Portal

Real people read [email protected]. Write to us if something in a conversation worried you, if you want to tell us about a safety response, or if you need help with an account.
